Krishna's First Expansion and the Original Principle of Service!
Śrī Baladeva, also known as Balarāma, is the elder brother of Lord Krishna. In the philosophy of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Baladeva is Krishna's first expansion. He is the source of many of the Lord's expansions and manifestations.
While Krishna is the original Supreme Personality of Godhead, Baladeva is His first expansion and eternal companion.
The Power of Service
One of the most beautiful aspects of Baladeva's personality is His eternal mood of service to Krishna.
Everything associated with Krishna's spiritual existence is supported by Baladeva's energy. He serves Krishna as His brother, friend and companion, and He also manifests in various forms to assist the Lord and His devotees. The spiritual principle represented by Baladeva is therefore deeply connected with service.
Devotional life is not about trying to become the centre. It is about discovering the joy of serving Krishna and serving His devotees.
Baladeva and the Spiritual Master
In Gaudiya Vaishnava teachings, Baladeva is also connected with the principle of the spiritual master.
The spiritual master helps the sincere seeker understand Krishna and learn how to engage in devotional service.
Through Baladeva's mercy, the living being receives the strength and guidance necessary to progress on the spiritual path.
Baladeva at New Jagannath Puri Temple
Together with Jagannātha and Subhadrā, Śrī Baladeva reminds us that Krishna is never alone. The three Deities reveal the Lord surrounded by eternal relationships of love.
When we offer our prayers before Śrī Baladeva, we can pray for the strength, guidance and humility to become sincere servants of Krishna and His devotees.
